Christmas Carol

Christmas Carol

Christmas is coming so here’s a full Christmas lesson plan to get into the Holiday mood with your students.

Objectives:

-Recognize and identify words, learn new vocabulary, sing Christmas Carol.

-Work in small groups and write their own version of the song and use their imagination.

-Share their work with classmates.

Warm up

As a warm up, we could ask our students which their favourite Christmas carols are and why.

We could also go through dates and ask questions like for instance:

When is Christmas Eve? 24th December.

When is New Year’s Day? 1st January.  And so on…

Twelve Days of Christmas
1-Watch the following video, listen to the Christmas carol with lyrics and sing-along.

2-When you finish singing. Try to remember the words and match them with the right numbers.

  • Twelve                                                         geese
  • Seven                                                           partridge in a pear tree
  • Eight                                                            maids milking
  • Five                                                              French hens
  • Six                                                                turtle doves
  • Ten                                                               calling birds
  • Three                                                            golden rings
  • Nine                                                              swans
  • A                                                                   drummer drumming

  • Two                                                               ladies dancing
  • Eleven                                                           pipers piping

3- Ask the students to work in groups or individually in order to think and write their version of the song but changing the sentence: “On the first day of Christmas my teacher gave to me…” Once they have finished they can share their work with the rest of their classmates.

4- The teacher sings to motivate their students and asks them to sing along with her (giving handouts with the lyrics of the carol and extra worksheets about the carol).

FUN LISTENING COMPREHENSION. Time to be all ears!!

LISTENING COMPREHENSION. Time to be all ears!!

The following listening comprehension activity is adapted to students taking 6th level of Primary education. It goes through listening comprehension, pronunciation, speaking and grammar skills.

Suggested ideas to carry out in class:

The teacher will engage and prepare the students for the listening comprehension by explaining the exercise and carrying a motivational activity out in which they will practise their oral skills. They will go through the listening comprehension exercise , the teacher will read out an extract and she will give questions to be answered by the students and will also spell and write the answers on the board. Going through unknown vocabulary, practising the present continuous tense.

We’ll focus on pronunciation, and the students will repeat after the teacher and after a recording , to expose them to different accents and to be able to pronounce the different words accurately , the teacher will give examples of the different words,  stress and distinguish different sounds, eg : long and short vowels..

To consolidate the listening practice, the students will read a dialogue minding their pronunciation, intonation and punctuation. And could also do a role-play and act out to reinforce their self confidence trying English out.

ACTIVITY: Here’s the text the teacher will read aloud:

DANGER! ARTHUR AT WORK

It’s Friday morning. Arthur is in the library. Mary is also there with him. She is sitting at her desk and talking to a man. He is giving her a book, and she is stamping the date on it.

Where is Arthur? He is at the top of the ladder. He has some books in his hand. They are new books. He is putting them on the top shelves.

Is Mr. Steele in the library? No, he is in his office. A woman is with him and he is talking to her.

Now Arthur is taking some books from a box. He is giving them to Mary. She is writing the titles of the books on a card.

Arthur is climbing the ladder again. This is hard work for him he is tired.

Now he is sitting at the top of the ladder. The book in his hand is interesting, so he is reading it.

Halloween Story

Halloween Story

A simple Halloween Story. The Story of the little orange house.

What a Fun English class! Just with an orange paper and a pair of scissors, we can all have a really good time and learn so much this Halloween season!

Check the Story!! And follow the storytelling tutorial for teachers.

A Simple Halloween Story: The Little Orange House

Once upon a Halloween, a very tiny little witch was walking through the forest. The weather was turning colder and the tiny little witch was searching for a home to stay warm in while the icy winds blew.

She came across a piece of orange paper blowing in the wind. “Perfect!” said the tiny little witch, “This will make a wonderful home for me!”

And she pulled a tiny little pair of scissors out of her tiny little pockets (for she was a very prudent little witch and always had her tiny little scissors with her) and she folded the orange paper in half and then cut out a tiny little roof. [fold paper and cut the roof]
“Lovely!” said the tiny little witch, admiring her new home. “But, I shall need a tiny little door.” And so she took her tiny little scissors and cut a specially shaped tiny little door, just right for a tiny little witch wearing a tiny little witch’s hat. [make a door shaped like a rectangle with a slanting triangle on the top]

The tiny little witch walked in the door of her tiny little house. It was very dark inside. “I need to make some tiny little windows” she said. So, the tiny little witch took her tiny little scissors and cut some tiny little windows in the orange paper house. [cutting through all the layers of the folded paper, make square or circle shaped windows]

Just then, the tiny little witch heard a voice in the wind howling “Booooo! Boooooo! Boooo hoooooo!” It was a tiny little ghost and he was very sad.

“Tiny little ghost, why are you so sad?” asked the tiny little witch.

“Because winter is coming and I have no hooooooome. Boooo! Boooo Hoooo!” sobbed the ghost.

“Don’t worry, friend,” said the tiny little witch. “I will make room for you in my lovely orange paper house. I will give you your very own ghost-shaped door so that you feel right at home.” And, with that, the tiny little witch cut a small ghost shaped door in the orange paper house. [cut a small triangle in between the door and the windows, on the fold of the paper]

The tiny little ghost went inside his tiny ghost shaped door and the tiny witch went inside her tiny witch shaped door. The two friends were safe and warm inside the orange paper house. And they lived happily ever after! [open up your folded paper and reveal the surprise]
